ALLELUIA: A CELEBRATION OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CHURCH

In his autobiography, Music Is My Mistress, Duke Ellington wrote about his sacred music, "Now I can say in public what I’ve said on my knees". John Coltrane mentioned that his suite "A Love Supreme" was his offering to God. Now, its my turn...

The African American church has been several institutions within the African American community. It has been the religious center. It is the political voice of the oppressed. It educated our youth. It has inspired its leaders. Its diversity is its strength. From the Cathedral to the storefront. From the Catholics to the Baptists, we all worship one God, his son Jesus Christ, our savior, and one Holy Spirit. It was my objective to show the many facets of this institution, this vessel of hope. I can only pray that I am up to the task.

As a child, "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones" was my favorite hymm of the Episcopal Church, St. Albans the Martyr, in New York City. It celebrates God, the church and man. It seems fitting that the spirit of this hymm captures the essence of these photographs.

With many thanks to God, and my family, my wife Brenda, my children Belinda, and Bethany (for putting up with this madness), and to the many parishes, congregations, pastors, preachers, and children of God….

Let’s enter this sanctuary, fellowship, and worship.
